WHY DO I PAINT TREES?

Why choose my art? As an I artist I care deeply for how one feels or has felt while going through life..  I create art to give hope and awareness in people to look upto the value of natural resources. They provide protection and unconditional warmth to all species. I try to capture the changing seasons. The viabrant colors of summer and fall. The evergreens of winter or bare branches with glistening snow flakes. Remind us of our life cycle.  My goal is to bring awareness to the environment. Trees being one of my favorite subjects to paint amongst many others. Trees grow in every country, in every season, every hill, and valley. Trees hear and understand every language, hear music of all nations. They provide fruits, vegetables, and oxygen. They are a source for making beautiful furniture, handicrafts, musical instruments and more.  At present I am drawn to creating art with recycled glass, metal, fabric, clay and more. I have experience with Pen & Ink, Batik, Ceramic Sculpture and Oils.

Aruna Mettler: ARTIST STATEMENT

For me art is like a thread of life which connects all species similar to the rungs of the double-helix as it binds the gene code. The DNA of each individual is unique in spite of the bonds that hold it together. My art is original and unique. I have felt a deep compassion towards the environent of which we are an integral part of. I paint for the new born baby who has taken his/her first breath, for the children who learn, play, and grow, for the adults who want to live healthier lives. Culture, religion, race, and sex are purely incidental. I cherish the freedom of expression that can be felt deeply and is the fore bearer of creativity. Creativity which is unblemished by labels, isms, ethnicity, and gender.

I have many stories but today I will share the journey of my artistic evolution since I stepped foot on the soil of America. Decades go, I worked for the Girl Scouts f America in Washington D.C. Mary Kay, a VP often chatted with me. I was a traditional Indian Girl with a dot on my forehead and wrapped in a saree. One day she asked me: “Aruna What do you do on the weekends?” I said that I paint on Fabric. She became curious and asked me to bring some samples to the office.

I brought in about 10 pieces of Batk paintings that I had created. Mary Kay fell in love with my fabric art. And suggested that I display them in the office as an exhibit. I did and that Christmas I was commissioned several paintings. That was the stepping stone of my artistic journey…
